October Planting Tips

Fall is one of the best times of year to plant in Northern California! With mild temperatures, occasional rain, and warm soil, it’s the perfect window to give your plants a strong start before winter. Here are some top tips to make the most of your fall planting season:

**1. Take Advantage of Warm Soil**

Unlike spring, when the soil is still cold, fall soil stays warm enough for roots to grow and establish quickly. This helps trees, shrubs, and perennials develop strong roots before the chill of winter.

**2. Choose the Right Plants**

Fall is ideal for planting **cool-season vegetables** like lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, and carrots. It’s also a great time to add **California natives, shrubs, bulbs, and hardy perennials** such as lavender, salvia, or manzanita.

**3. Refresh Your Mulch**

A fresh layer of mulch (2–3 inches) helps insulate roots, retain soil moisture, and prevent weeds. Organic mulch will also break down over time, improving soil health.

**4. Water Wisely**

Even though the weather is cooler, new plantings still need regular watering until the rains arrive. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep root growth.

**5. Feed the Soil**

Before planting, enrich your beds with compost or organic soil amendments. This restores nutrients after the summer season and creates the perfect foundation for fall crops.

**6. Divide and Transplant Perennials**

If your garden perennials are overcrowded, now’s the time to divide and replant them. They’ll have months to settle in before spring growth begins.

**7. Don’t Forget Bulbs!**

Plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and iris in late fall for a colorful spring display.

**8. Clean Up Summer Debris**

Remove dead plants and leaves to prevent pests and disease from overwintering in your garden.

**9. Protect Tender Plants**

If you’re planting anything frost-sensitive, be prepared to cover or move them to a protected area during cold nights.

**10. Enjoy the Process**

Fall planting is less stressful on both plants and gardeners. Enjoy the cooler days, fewer weeds, and the promise of a vibrant spring garden ahead!
